With our current day information overload, this book presents an interesting perspective with the power of data and what to do with it. This is a great guidebook telling you were you need to go, and what you need to do to take advantage of this unique opportunity. The data that you've been collecting over the years is worth something if you know what to do with it, and becomes valuable when you gain information from it. Good examples are shown on how large corporations have increased revenue through systematic data analysis. A recommended read to acquire the skills of data science, and the tools of the trade.
This is both an important and timely book. With everyone talking about Big Data and Data Science, its tough to know whom to listen to and how to make sense of it all. This book cuts through the noise and presents the reader with a roadmap for success. Whether you've been in this space for a while or are just coming up to speed, Secrets of the Big Data Revolution is a must read.
If there ever was a primer or college level 101 text book for the subject of 'Big Data', Josh and Jeremy Kolb have written it. As a layman, I appreciated their conversational style and concerted effort to define technical terms and avoid the jargon only industry insiders would use. I see a need for this book in every entrepreneur's library, and as for me, I intend to order a hard copy as well. This will be a great resource book in the years ahead, as the rest of the business world runs to keep up with these visionaries.
Back in 1965 we started working toward developing such data bases as described in this book. It is good to see a clear, simple, lay-person-language exposition of a complex and challenging subject. I'd like to see a copy of this in the hands of every IT interested person, it would save system analysts a lot of explanatory time! The author hits the sweet spot between simplification and obfuscation and maintains a light, easy to read, touch.
There are a lot of historical references which I feel seem a bit like padding in some places, but on the whole the book provides a useful overview and is extremely readable. I wish that it had more technical meat in it, but I'll say that it's a great read for executives and managers looking to prime the pump with the big picture of Big Data as it exists currently. As far as from the standpoint of an implementer, I would say it functions in a similar fashion--you'll need another book to do anything specific.
The author does a decent, if simple, introduction to new visualization tools and their advantages vs historic BI reporting. And he's not wrong. The issue I have is the rejection and talking down of tools and ecosystems because of a challenge with one component - and not even making reference to the advantages and benefits.
The new data discovery tools are great, but they are not a panacea for data challenges - and by ignoring and minimizing the difficulties around data governance, cleansing, and even sourcing, this book is misleading and needs significant supplementation to provide any basis for readers to make decisions or recognize the tradeoffs of proposed options.
In today's world if we want to succeed in business we need to conduct it intelligently. "Data Mining" as the author calls it, offers the resources available to us to grasp that elusive success.
As there is so much data circulating around the internet, one can easily get overwhelmed and lost. This book helps you assess why data is so critical, and how analysing it intelligently can help you sift the relevant information from the dregs and leads you to insights and their application, that are generally obscured from our sight.
A book that could have been hard to digest for the technically challenged like myself, "a worthless collection of 0's and 1's", becomes exciting and valuable when you can gain information from it and it starts answering your questions.
The author "automagically" (once again using his term) takes you to the heart of the solutions and helps you unravel. Data Mining is obviously becoming more accessible and more lucrative than Gold Mining.
